Bathroom floors: porcelain tile, luxury vinyl or natural stone

Bathroom floors have to handle water, steam and bare feet.

Rule of thumb. Porcelain is the safe default for wet floors. Vinyl suits tighter budgets, and natural stone is for people who love its look and accept the upkeep.

Why it lasts

What’s behind the tile is what matters.

Grout is not waterproof. In a shower, the water that soaks through the grout has to stop at a waterproofing membrane behind the tile, or it ends up in the wall. That’s why every shower we build gets a full membrane system, sealed at every seam, corner, niche and valve.

Floors get the same care. Large tiles need a flat floor to avoid lippage, so we level first and use the right mortar and trowel for the tile size.

With drywall, the finish level matters. Walls that will be painted in strong light, like long hallways or rooms with big windows, need extra skim coats to look smooth. We finish to suit the room, not just to cover the seams.

Questions

Tile and drywall questions, answered.

Straight answers. Anything else, just ask.

Ask us directly

01Do you waterproof showers before tiling?

Always. Every tiled shower gets a full waterproofing membrane system behind the tile, including the niche, bench and valve openings. Grout alone is not waterproof.

02Can you tile over existing tile?

We generally don’t. Tiling over old tile hides problems, adds height and weight, and in a shower it can trap moisture. Removing the old tile lets us check and repair what’s behind it.

03Do you do drywall only, without the rest of the renovation?

Yes. We take on drywall installation, taping and repairs as their own job, as well as part of basements and full renovations.

04How long does a tiled shower take?

A standard tiled shower usually takes about a week, including waterproofing, tile, grout and glass measurements. Glass is often installed a week or two later once it is made to size.

05Do I need a permit for drywall or tile?

Usually not for replacing finishes. Adding new walls, finishing a basement or moving plumbing generally does need a permit, which we handle as part of the job.
