Local to Uxbridge

Uxbridge homes, in town and out.

Uxbridge combines a small-town core with a large rural township, so the homes we see range from older houses near downtown to newer subdivisions and country properties on larger lots.

In town, the work is often kitchens, bathrooms and basements. On rural lots, it’s more likely to include decks, fences and projects planned around wells and septic systems.

Uxbridge also allows secondary suites in existing houses. If you’re considering a basement apartment for family or rental income, we’ll help you through the Township’s process from the first inquiry to registration.

Permits and local rules

Secondary suites and permits in Uxbridge.

The Township of Uxbridge defines a secondary suite as a self-contained unit in an existing house, on any floor, with its own bedroom, kitchen and bathroom and either a separate or shared entrance.

The Township asks homeowners to start by contacting its Development Services Department to confirm the property allows a second unit, then apply for a building permit, and finally register the unit with the Township as a two-unit house.

Most other renovations follow the Ontario Building Code: structural changes, new plumbing and finished basements generally need a permit. We confirm what your project needs before work starts.

Ask us directly

01Do you work in Uxbridge?

Yes. We work in the town of Uxbridge and across the township, including rural properties.

02Can I add a secondary suite in Uxbridge?

Uxbridge allows secondary suites in existing houses where zoning permits. The Township asks you to confirm with Development Services first, get a building permit, and register the unit as a two-unit house.

03What does a secondary suite need in Uxbridge?

The Township describes it as a self-contained unit with its own bedroom, kitchen and bathroom, with a separate or shared entrance. It must also meet the Ontario Building Code and Fire Code.

04Do you build decks and fences on rural properties?

Yes, including larger decks and long fence runs on country lots.

05How much does a legal basement apartment cost?

A full legal suite typically costs more than a standard finished basement because of fire separation, egress and separate systems. Our legal suite guide and rental calculator walk through the numbers.
